Gilboa rocks!

The November 2007 issue of NewScientist magazine carries an article about out own Gilboa, New York. A Binghamton University scientist has confirmed that the "stump" fossils discovered there in 1850 are, in fact, evidence of the world's oldest trees...like from 385 million years ago.

I know the Gilboa area for the Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project located there; a nifty auxiliary hydro-electric pump-drain-repump affair. Now that we have the value-added possibility of the "stump" forest, methinks we should engineer a field trip to visit both.

I live in Gilboa and am from there. There are 5 or 6 of the fossils right beside the town hall for everyone to see. The historical society has a wonderful video of the fossils and their story. It is a great place to visit, but the museum is only open in the summer. The power project also has a nice visitor's center. And of course the area is just beautiful!
