Satisfaction

When I was a boy, I remember my Dad telling me the story of The Song of Roland; one of those fine old stories like Gilgamesh, the Iliad, and Dante's Human Comedy. First stories, I like to call them.

So partly out of sentiment, and partly out of a literary sense of duty, I have a copy at ACSLIB. In fact, I keep a couple versions of most of them in my collection. Earlier this year I had two students read Gilgamesh, and recently I was able to fill an inter-library loan from another BOCES for The Song of Roland.

I get a deep satisfaction in that; bringing a venerable story to someone, who if not for my Dad, would miss out on hearing that horn across the ages.
