What about a distributed library?

Our new circulation system is web-based. In recent years, my non-fiction collection sits on my shelves more than in the hands of teachers and students. So I'm thinking of locating mini-collections in selected classrooms, noting their where-abouts on the MARC record, and giving those teachers loan & return rights so that as they cultivate user interest, they can also circulate library holdings.

Anybody have experience with either of those facets; resident mini-collections and or satellite circulation within your building? Anybody want to side with the dangerously-desperate aspect of this or the perhaps with the library books-need-to-be-every-place-just-like-DVDs-at-the- convenience-store?
