One of those spooky kind of coincidences.
This week I just finished reading The Noise of Time by Julian Barnes. It is a fictional biography of Dmitri Shostakovich from which the author launches off on insightful meditations on aging, time, and life. It was an interesting counterpoint to M.T. Anderson's Symphony for the City of the Dead, which I read a year or two ago.
Also this week I repaired our old library phonograph player and brought in some seasonal LPs; mainly because the old library collection consists of mostly poetry, dramas, and historical speeches.
But,l o and behold, one of the few musical records in that collection turns out to be ... Symphony No. 5 by Shostakovich.
I will have to turn-the-table on Bing Crosby, and play give Dmitri some turntable time.
