A nifty article in Smithsonian magazine illustrates how one scientist/historian is using GIS technology to better understand the Civil War (as well as the Holocaust). Her imaging reveals the view Robert E. Lee had & did not have of the battlefield; leading him to allow the ill-fated Pickett's Charge and not being able to see Union reinforcements arriving from the east.
P.S. Try out the interactive graphic supplements to many of the articles by using the nifty Actable app on your iDevice.
