Sometimes it's the incidental amid the intentional that provokes.
In this curious Wall Street Journal article (February 20, 2008; Page A1) about an entrepreneur who is lofting transmitters with weather-type balloons to provide wireless service to truckers in unpopulated areas of the Midwest, I gleaned these two items:
- about 1800 weather balloons are launched world-wide everyday.
- the engines of commercial jets are designed to withstand the ingestion of an eight pound bird.
If you have your ears on, I'd be glad to hear of corroborating evidence for these to statements.
