Who owns the past?
Several nations are aggressively working to get their national treasures returned from museums around the world; arguing their heritage is at stake. Museums argue that the only way for people around the world to appreciate the accomplishments of those same civilizations is to exhibit them in their great collections.
This Time magazine article does a balanced job of presenting both sides of the argument along with discussing some creative solutions.
The value of the issue is how it reflects the current strength of nationalism around the world and the issue of whether this century's "globalization" is just 19th century "imperialism" repackaged.
