Holy cow! Created at least a thousand years ago, a roof plated with gold that weighs in at 100,000 pounds, topped with a 75-carat diamond, the Shwedagon in Rangoon is an anchor to the Buddhist faithful for whom "a shrine is an open house, with no one in charge."
This Wall Street Journal piece (February 23, 2008; Page W14) paints a fine historical picture in only a view paragraphs.
"Last September, the monks' revolt against the country's military government began at the Shwedagon, where peaceful, prayerful protests were suppressed with tear gas and batons." Still making history today.
