I like this page at the Columbia College site (read about their site overhaul in the Chronicle of Higher Ed.). As part of their very-friendly-to-incoming-students effort, students use check-boxes to indicate several career or interest choices. As they do, a selection of suggest recommendations (handsomely photographed) cascade below.
It seemed to me that this would be a neat feature in an online library catalog; notch a bunch of subject headers (historical fiction, United States, 1900s, Civil Rights) and with each box checked, a kind of slot machine roll-up of titles winnows or expands before your eyes.
