A great source for WWI soldiers' poems is at the the LOC's collection of Stars and Stripes. A search for "army poets" turns up hundreds of poems from the papers featured column, "The Army's Poets."
Why not build a ELA or Global Studies lesson around this resource; comparing actual events to poem topics and exploring how poetry addresses, expands, and/or otherwise comments on the war experience. That the Stars and Stripes received 18,000 poems from soldiers after running the column for a year says something about poetry's relevance within the hum,an experience.
