The web inventor, Tim Berners-Lee, makes an eloquent call in Scientific American to keep Open Standards and Web Neutrality a part of our Internet experience. He cautions the rise of smartphone apps over web apps, and clarifies how, like propriety sites such as iTunes, they are "centralized and walled off."
These subtle inroads into an Open Standard web are eroding the democratic foundation behind the web. Understanding the consequences of these changes and the potential manipulation of our experience that they may foretell are important issues for us and our students to know about.
