The New York Times featured an art criticism of Masdar, the city-from-scratch being built in the United Arab Emirates. While most of the article talks about the green technology incorporated in its overall design and its details, it also questions if this city-of-the-future doesn't encourage the kind of social stratification/separation reflected in gated-communities.
The article might make a good real-world comparison if your students are reading Brave New World, Looking Backward, Animal Farm, Lost Horizon, or other books dealing with visionary societies.
