At the crossroads of Consuming and Contributing

This link comes by way of anoved (see additional links in the sidebar).

It is a video of Clay Shirky's recent speech, "Gin, Television, and Social Surplus" at the Web 2.0 Expo.

It is a meditation about how and why he believes we are beginning to utilize our "cognitive surplus" by becoming doers and sharers, not just consumers, online; beginning to tap that huge dormant resource: our cumulative gumption.

It is a captivating speech both for its premise and for the promise that it holds for libraries as places to "create" meaning from resources.

I've read about this speech on anoved and even heard my husband try to sum it up in person. Well, I finally took the time to listen to it while dicing potatoes for tonight's dinner (because I didn't have the patience to sit in front of the screen to watch it exclusively), and it is well worth the listen! I'm all for doing something creative in my "free" time! I think this would be a great symposium or convocation speech-an ongoing topic to mull over and revisit again and again over the course of one's life.
