Tracking Textbook Traffic: an ILL (sort of)?

A closing article in the March/April edition of Scholastic Administrator relates how one large district (with 75 schools) barcoded and tracked all of their textbooks so that they could more effectively (and cost-effectively) manage their use among different buildings.

I'm wondering if that model might not be able to morph into a BOCES model? Imagine we' re short 7 copies of an Earth Science book and S-E has 20 copies sitting on the shelf this term. We're OK with borrowing each others investment with library books, so how big of a leap would it be to borrow textbooks? Good for students, good for penny-pinching.

Seems like the sort of umbrella project BOCES might be able to run with...
