Near term / long term: the price of coal

The environmental/economic conundrum of using coal for energy is nicely crystallized in this NYT article. These are boom times for the U.S. exporting coal for China's muscular manufacturing and Europe's energy needs. Meanwhile, the market at home "suffers" from environmental legislation that is attempting to address global warming.

There are some strong talking points here: thinking globally versus nationally, economic opportunity in the face of a recession, the role of commerce / government in balancing near term and long term goals,
