Chess: it's elementary

Idaho will be offering a chess curriculum to all of its second and third graders (NY Time article).

Although the educators look forward to the anecdotal evidence that chess will help strategic thinking, they are equally anticipating returns in the realm of social development:
“They learn give and take in chess. There are courtesies that you follow. It has been really beneficial for them.”

Our own experience with chess tournaments in this library bears this out. Year after year, we see middle school students value the chess experience; learning to become "good" losers and winners, resetting boards for the next players, and respecting "quiet zones" where games are in session.

Good move, Idaho.
