Afton volunteers

Today our community fire departments visited school as part of Fire Safety Day to acclimate elementary students to firefighters in their full gear, to review basic fire safety in the home, and to give tours of their rescue vehicles.

One of the volunteer instructors (the fellow in red) is firefighter and 9-1-1 dispatcher.

He was also an 8th grade member of my 2002 Art/Library class that researched and planned an event to honor Afton volunteers. Among other things, he was a master of ceremony for the culminating event. I remember he asked the assembled community members why they volunteered; to which Mr. Bolster (for whom our community center is named) responded from the doorway in his gravelly voice, "because you are worth it."

What goes around, comes around.
