In the slippery landscape of digital resources and the even dicier terrain of what mode of access users prefer, a constant library challenge is how to present the online resources that we champion through the easiest avenues of access. For instance, with the development of the SLS 24/7 database portal for subscription databases, I have forsaken any other locale for posting those resources. It is a two-click find from our school home page.
What have languished, however, are the really neat A-list free online databases that we regularly encourage students to use. Where to post them without confusing our one-stop shoppers?
Some colleagues have found a pretty good fix by including these sites (and their links) right in the OPALS catalog. Good idea. So I did it, too. I also gave each entry a 650a subject heading "Database." That way I can easily find and show the entire "collection" to new users.
