This technology thing

This week I spent some time sleeving old newspaper clippings into sheet protectors. The clippings were all weekly articles written by the Afton journalism club, CEHISCANY, for The Afton Enterprise; our hometown weekly.

These were the 1940s; days of manual typewriters, carbon paper, and linotype machines. Still, the community was treated to a very detailed review each week of what was going on at school: lessons, productions, essays, guests, alumni updates, and staff news. From here, the technology of the times would seem to be the obstacle-to-overcome in getting that news out, but on reflection I think the times demanded that they remind themselves at every turn that they were in-this-together: the war effort, the community effort, the raising these kids to be adults effort. So part of the business of the school was connecting the dots for the whole community.

It was the technology that made that all easier, not more difficult, after all. So, I wonder what our excuse is?
