I don't know where or if this shows up on my/our NYSED Common Core assessments. I like to think it shows up on a more enduring ledger, but yesterday I learned, at the same moment as the rest of the building, that an impromptu send-off was being held in five minutes for one of our state championship-bound athletes.
I grabbed a camera and helped re-choreograph the assembled student body into a paired ribbon of fans, cued the honoree, and filmed his triumphal walk as he high-fived his way through the K-12 well-wishers.
I scooted over to the library, downloaded the video, cropped and titled it in iMovie, then output it as an m4v video. I burned a copy for his Mom, and printed out a contact sheet of stills for her that I had gleaned from the clip. Then a posted a photo on the school home page with a caption link to the 30-second celebration video. Took me 20 minutes.
I figure 30 years from now he will want to relish that moment as much as he does today. Not sure how this improves student learning, but it's what I do.
