Book talk: the Arab World

I add another notch to my Modern Library Chronicles belt with Milton Viorst's Storm from the East. It's subtitle is The Struggle Between the Arab World and the Christian World, but it is very much about the struggle within the Arab world also. The book confirms the value of this series for me; untangling in 200 pages the complex histories and motives of this pivotal region.

Viorst brings a reporter's lean eye to dissecting and explaining the role of Pan-Arabism, nationalism, tribalism, sectarianism, Islam, and factionalism in the continuing evolution of this struggle. Without simplifying the issues, he manages to orchestrate their influence within states, leaders, and the people.

It is a heroic effort that enabled me to appreciate the backstory behind the sometimes numbing and anecdotal nature of Middle East reporting.
