Attention parbucklers

The last article in the February issue of Discovery takes a quick look at the huge engineering challenge of righting the the Costa Concordia which ran aground a year ago. Turns out there is a site to for avid engineering fans (like me) to follow the process: The Parbuckling Project. It is rich with the strategies and resources that it will take to right the 951 foot liner.

Most curious, however, is that the $400 million effort will end with the ship being dismantled and sold for scrap metal. You mean there is over $400 million worth of metal in an ocean liner? Wow.
