Our Library Commons

The past few weeks I have been reconfiguring our physical space so that we can reconfigure our resources and services. Our library housed nonfiction books on the left in tall fixtures and fiction books on the right in waist-high fixtures. We wanted to move all our books to the fixtures on the left.

We began with a way-overdue weeding of non-fiction; clearing ther necessary 30 shelves of space required.
We stacked the weeded books on the floor.
We scooched the entire nonfiction/reference section over one entire bay.
This allowed us room to move the entire fiction section into the newly opened vacancy closest to our entrance.
As former fiction bays became empty, we moved the free-standing fixtures out and began to sift in benches and chairs.
The resulting move gives us a larger more flexible space while positioning our popular fiction section at our entrance.

Some spontaneous inspiration salvaged the fiction fixtures to become laptop counter-stations that now flank the opposite side of our entrance.
