Veterans' Day

Recently, I have been posting the governor's notices for flying the flag at half-mast for New Yorkers killed in combat around the world. He forwards them to all public institutions. I tape them to the library door and have them on display at our school reception desk.

I think it is important to draw the correlation between those young people who have sacrificed their opportunity for any future at all with our school-full of young people who have every opportunity, but perhaps not the daily motivation, to pursue and fulfill a life of promise. Implicit in the soldiers' sacrifice is an obligation for all us to make the most of our opportunities each day. It seems the very least we might do.

That said, I hope we take a moment with our students to talk about our upcoming "day off" for Veterans' Day. A few words about its purpose and ceremonies may cultivate some involvement down the road; where we might not only pause for the day, but participate in it.

Perhaps showing this short film from the Department of Veteran Affairs would be a good place to start.
