Keeping up with History

Last night I had an opportunity to speak at the Afton Historical Society's monthly meeting. It was an informal gathering so my presentation was, happily, more of a conversation with them. I talked about the value of our personal histories and how many ways there are to share them; with a real emphasis on the sharing portion.

Using examples from school and home, I illustrated how many ways are available to distribute the words we write, the images we make, and the audio we record, and how that sharing magnifies our experience of each other and the world. Specifically, I took the recording my class had made last year of our town historian. I brought it on a CD, I played it on iTunes, I showed it being hosted at the Internet Archive, I showed it embedded on our school website, on this blog, and then played it for them off a pocket-sized MP3 player.

As we talked, we suggested several ways that the school and society might collaborate in ways that would "increase the sharing" for us both. I look forward to speaking with them again.
