I had a great time in Cooperstown recently, participating as a judge for the state-level competition of National History Day. It was a very inspiring day.
As part of a three person panel, I helped judge the individual and group junior documentaries: films of not more than ten minutes on the theme "Innovation in History."
The entries were wonderful and they reaffirmed my belief in the value of project-based learning. There was a real opportunity (not to mention requisite) to establish context and breadth of understanding for these documentaries. As I watched the films and interviewed the students, their understanding of the topic was palpable. Good stuff. Good stuff.
