Learning to read by text-messages

A fascinating report on NPR this morning as Steve Inskeep traverses India-Pakistan on the Grand Trunk Road. He reported on the effort of a woman teaching other women to read through text-messaging on cell phones. Within the constraints of their culture, this scenario allows the students to stay at home while having access to the "lessons."

Again, as we wrestle with student-use of cell phones in school, it is good to know that there are incremental applications being found for their use as teaching tools. It remains for us to adapt these niche ideas to our own particular challenges; finding that tipping-point where benefits outweigh perceived liabilities.
