A favorite recovered
Farewell to Lincoln Square by Raphael Soyer, 1959
Ever since I saw this painting at the Hirshhorn Museum back in 1975 it has been a favorite; one of those images that won't let go of me. Maybe it's because Raphael and his brothers Moses and Isaac, all painters, were such working-class modest fellows; like folks I might know at the diner.
It is like a good poem; something I can return to again and again for what remains familiar yet always new.
