Independent Study

A very good thing happened last night.

A senior and his mentor presented their semester-long research collaboration to the general public.

Beyond the richness of the content, the depth of their intellectual curiosity, and the professionalism of their presentation, I was struck by the “rightness” of the whole endeavor; a credit-bearing independent study undertaken for the value of intensive learning, and formally presented as the rigorous educational accomplishment that it was; to the credit of student, teacher, and school.

Let’s build on this precedent; actively challenging upperclassmen and ourselves to apply our capacities to unique independent studies that lead to readings, presentations, recitals, and forums.
