Pound for pound, a most amazing teacher

So, Mr. P.'s English class is reading Around the world in eighty days. As part of their investigation into the plot, they needed to know the exchange rate in 1872 between British pounds and American dollars (They are trying to determine if Phileas Fogg was, in fact, guilty of the theft!).

After doing some searching on his own, he puts me on the trail. I managed to patch together some work-arounds, but nothing definitive.

Next morning, Mr. P. approaches me with a smile and the news that his email to the Bank of England was answered with the news that their "research department" was on the job!

Today he received his answer: $5.31 per pound sterling in 1872.

I hereby confer honorary research kudos to Mr. P. for his intrepid international inquiry!
