Use the Wall Street Journal article that we distributed in class (or read here), the adjacent video clip, and these Chenango county "dividend, interest, and rent" income figures (line 46) to form an opinion of whether "gentrification" is either likely or happening in our area as well as the advantages and disadvantages that you would foresee.
Use passages from the resources provide (or other resources that you site) in writing your "comment" to this blog assignment.

I computed the percentage growth in Chenango County from the "dividend" income information. Chenango is at 129% growth which compares to the 177% for the area cited in the WSJ article.
That seems to indicate that gentrification might be underway, but I'm thinking we might need to find what percentage of that increase might be attributable to our aging ppulation in general.
Good point. See if you can't track down that info about the over 65 population percentage increase for our county by next class time.
Meanwhile, do you you see advantages or disadvantages for a situation like this in Afton?
I'm thinking some of both, in which case communities like Afton should be looking to their local governments to be anticipating this growth with discussions and research about zoning questions, infrastructure and some soul-searching questions about what we want our future to look like.
Maybe you should pitch that idea at an upcoming Village meeting! You need to attend one to get vredit for this course anyway.
What to you think?
I'd be glad to help you prepare.
